State Government recognises Emergency Treatment Room (July 2010)

Over the last 14 months, the Board and Management of May Shaw Health Centre, have lobbied the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and local Politicians for funding to operate the Accident & Emergency Centre.

As many readers are aware, a very successful fundraising activity (The Accidental Dinner) was held last October that raised over $90,000 to ensure the continuation of emergency treatment to both residents and visitors to the municipality.

Continued negotiations with DHHS have culminated with the news that additional funding will be provided to May Shaw Health Centre to provide on-call emergency medical treatment provided by the local Doctors.

In recognition of the purpose of the funding, the name "Accident & Emergency Centre" is replaced with new name of "Emergency Room".

This funding along with the funding to maintain 2 inpatient beds is sufficient to continue to provide all but high level medical treatment locally.

May Shaw Health Centre will also continue to provide a palliative care suite that is totally unfunded and free to all people that need this service. Additionally, another 2 inpatient beds have been provided and are also unfunded to ensure that the need of the community are met.

May Shaw Health Centre expands Health Services (June 2010)

Many in the community know of the aged care programs run by May Shaw and quite a few know the inside of the emergency room at the Centre in Swansea, however, there is another program that deserves recognition and that is the HEALTHIER TOGETHER program.

The HEALTHIER TOGETHER program offers the community many services on behalf of Government and private providers all with the aim of preventive health and health promotion.

In July one of the new services for the Glamorgan/Spring Bay municipality will be the Rural Primary Health Services Program which will expand the existing services offered by Regional Health Services which finishes at the end of the month.

The new program will ensure the entire municipality has access to a choice of free health and primary care services that the major cities take for granted. These services will include health education, preventative health activities, healthy lifestyle promotion and access to allied health services such as audiology and podiatry.

Over the next few months, expect to see many healthy activities that you can take part in across the municipality from Bicheno to Buckland. The HEALTHIER TOGETHER Coordinator, Nadine Ozols, welcomes feedback and if you have a specific healthy activity you would like to see in your area, Nadine will be pleased to hear from you.

An exciting development is the employment of a trained social worker who will not only liaise with our younger people to address their concerns; they will also lobby for social justice for the entire community. The social worker will build on the previously offered counselling services and will be available for group sessions as well as one-on-one counselling.
